BIOGRAPHY OF ART SCHWERTZ

Art Schwertz is a lifelong resident of the Second Congressional District of Louisiana. He grew up in the Gentilly area and presently owns and resides in an Eastern New Orleans home with his wife, Sheila, and their children, Christopher, Stephen and Daniel. Art's passion is for the people of this district - the very reason he is running for the United States House of Representatives. He has the ability as a servant-leader to effectively bring together the funding and resources necessary to raise the quality of life for all residents in the district and move us forward in the 21st Century.

Art is a graduate of Brother Martin High School and attended Louisiana State University on an Honor Scholarship. He graduated from LSU with a Bachelor of Arts in History. While there, he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and served as Vice-President, Rush Chairman and Alumni Relations Chairman. His duties as Alumni Relations Chairman taught him the skills necessary to communicate with individuals across generational lines while his duties as Vice President and Rush Chairman sharpened his skills for bringing together people in working toward common goals.

After graduating from LSU, Art returned home to the 2nd Congressional District where he began his career as a Commercial and Industrial Real Estate Appraiser. He is currently an Associate Member of the Appraisal Institute. Over the past dozen years Art has appraised most of the new hotels in New Orleans along with a number of multi-family and industrial properties throughout New Orleans and the Gulf South Region.

Since achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at age 15, Art has remained active in the Boy Scouts of America. He is a certified trainer along with his wife. They serve in various capacities at both the Boy and Cub Scout levels. Art has served as District Commissioner for Muskhogea District in Eastern New Orleans and as Chaplain for the Protestant Committee on Scouting for Southeast Louisiana Council where he oversaw the organization and planning of the annual retreat. He also serves in an advisory capacity on the Properties Committee of the Southeast Louisiana Council.

Art and Sheila are active members of Berean Bible Church in Algiers. As a past treasurer and deacon Art was responsible for overseeing an annual budget of half-a million dollars. In this role, he was able to lead the church in the wise stewardship of its resources. He presently serves in the men's and children's ministries where he seeks to minister to the needs of those around him.

A family man in both words and action, Art is a member of the American Family Association including his involvement in their project One Million Dads. He is also a member of the Heritage Foundation and the Home School Legal Defense Association.

In all of his time as a Scout Leader and Church Leader, the most valuable characteristic he learned was that of Servant Leadership. It is this same quality of servant-leadership that Art intends to bring to the Second Congressional District. Art is not a career politician; therefore, he owes no one but the people of the 2nd Congressional District. For too long our representative has been focused on national issues while neglecting the issues that directly affect our neighborhoods - economy, housing, and crime. As your representative, Art will work to bring together the resources necessary to solve the challenges facing our district and lead us boldly into the 21st Century.
