Republican selects Democrat as Campaign Manager
New Orleans, LA. September 8, 2004- Art Schwertz, Republican U.S. Congressional candidate for the 2nd District has added a new political player in his bid to oust 14-year incumbent William Jefferson. The would-be Congressman, has selected Paul Matthews as his new campaign manager.
Paul Matthews is a 20-year old, black, conservative Democrat who grew up in a single-parent home under the loving scrutiny of his mother who continually emphasized the importance of education. Hence, Paul is a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and is currently attending Tulane University majoring in Political Science. His goals are continuing education, setting an example of morality in government and striving to improve the leadership in our community and nation. He firmly believes that government is “of the people, by the people, and for the people” and government should be held accountable for its decisions and actions made on behalf of its people.
Candidate Schwertz believes Matthews has the knowledge, energy, passion, and political shrewdness to lead the campaign to victory on November 2nd. Matthews accepted the position because he believes Schwertz is the right man for the job. “Schwertz was born and raised right here in New Orleans,” Matthews declared. “Therefore, he knows first hand the cares of the people. Schwertz not only wants to fix the problems of the inner city, but make people proud of the 2nd District once again. He is a local businessman who has seen our district become a place where crime and drugs have become rampant – a place where high school and college graduates alike are leaving the district to find better opportunities and higher paying jobs in Texas, Arkansas, Georgia and Florida. Long-time residents are also moving to other districts for a better quality of life and greater opportunities. Future Congressman Schwertz wants to put a light on the problems of the inner city and confront the moral and economic problems that face this district unlike his opponent who is more interested in power and prestige than addressing the needs of the people. I admire Mr. Schwertz for reaching out to the people in our district in a strictly grassroots campaign against an incumbent who receives the majority of his backing from special interest groups. Art Schwertz is running for Congress to ‘Bring the District Back to the People’ --- where it belongs!”
